Ted Videos

“Amber Case: We are all cyborgs now” talks about how we are all cyborgs because we use technology to transport ourselves, so that we can be in more than one place at a time. She also talks about how we have a “second self” meaning that we act one way in person and another on the computer. A great example that she gave was facebook and how we interact and connect with other people.

“Why we have too few women leaders” by Sheryl Sandberg, talks about how women are not as confident in themselves like men. I believe that this is true because women are always second guessing themselves and are not willing to debate for what they want. Sheryl also talks about in order for women to be successful in the work force they should follow three things. The three things are sitting at the table, make a partner a real partner, and don’t leave until they leave. I believe that these are great steps to help women build success and become equal to men.

"Women of Hope" by Morley is a song with very true and meaningful lyrics. She talks about how women have hope and how women have changed. She says a very power line that is if you’re feeling helpless, help someone which basically states that women should come together and raise each other up rather than bringing each other down. Along with the powerful lyrics, pictures of women around the world were playing in the background and the pictures were of women helping and lending a helping hand to each other.

Ms. Anniversary

One Ms. movement that really engaged me was on women’s equality and the right to vote. In 1919, the 19th Amendment was finally passed in which women gained the right to vote. According to Ms. Magazine, women need to go out in the upcoming election in November to vote on women’s issues such as healthcare in which women may receive contraceptives. Women also need to vote to make sure that we are standing up for ourselves as a society of women. Women have come a long way in which we are now able to advocate for one another. Women are also running for top governmental offices such as the Senate. By having women in the Senate, a “women’s view point” is able to be expressed and understood. The ability to vote is very powerful in which women are given an equal opportunity to have their voices heard.

MS article

The MS article that I chose to read was "Femisphere: Sports Bloggers with a Gender Lens" by . The article talked about how sports writing is generally done by men, but there are some feminist out there who do sports writing as well. Caitlin Constantine is a sports blogger who was interview by the magazine and she speaks about reporting on women and how women are looked upon differently in sports. She speaks about the 2012 Olympics in which women such as Gabby Douglas and Lolo Jones were criticized not because of their performances, but because of their attire which is ridiculous. Feel free to share your thoughts.

Reflection on Sgt. Albanese and Trooper Arescos' Presentation

Last week we had the pleasure of hearing from two guest speakers. Sgt. Albanese and Trooper Aresco's presentation was very educational and informative. I learned a lot about Internet safety and the do's and dont's. Something that I found very interesting was that one should never leave the computer open because someone could hack in and turn on the web cam which would be very unfortunate to the person on the other side. I also learned that hackers could be across the globe and still have access to your information that is stored on the computer. I really enjoyed the presentation and walked away with a lot of great information.

Feminism

This week in in class we discussed "Baghdad Burning" and Riverbends blog. Each member of the class was responsible for defining different terms through out the book. My term to define was Feminism. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary Feminism is "the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes". Does any one disagree with this definition or have anything to add on?
